London's political turmoil escalates as Starmer's deputy steps down amidst government chaos
In a surprising turn of events, the United Kingdom is currently experiencing a government crisis following the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner. The crisis stems from a tax affair involving Rayner, who announced her resignation at noon.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer responded to the crisis by announcing a major cabinet reshuffle. As part of this reshuffle, David Lammy, previously Foreign Secretary, has taken over as the new deputy prime minister and justice minister. Yvette Cooper now holds the position of Foreign Secretary, with Shabana Mahmood taking over Cooper's previous position as Justice Secretary.
Angela Rayner had been under pressure due to incorrect advice about stamp duty for a property. This advice led to Rayner paying too little stamp duty, resulting in a breach of conduct standards, as found by an investigation.
Rayner, known for her sharp and talented political skills and her fearlessness in a fight, is considered a significant loss for Starmer's social democratic Labour Party. This resignation marks a major setback for the party.
Nigel Farage, leader of the right-wing populist Reform Party, has been making life difficult for the government for several months. He has repeatedly criticized or ridiculed Starmer's government course. Farage moved up his speech at the annual conference of his Reform Party, citing the government crisis as a reason.
Interestingly, in the British first-past-the-post system, the strongest party nationally is not necessarily the strongest in parliament. This system could potentially work in Farage's favour, as he claims that Reform has won 100 polls. He now expects new elections in 2027 instead of 2029.
Farage has been playing on the fears of the British population, particularly on the issue of migration. He has criticized Starmer's government, calling it "unqualified" and "just as bad, if not worse" than the previous Conservative government.
Despite the challenges, Prime Minister Starmer remains focused on the cabinet reshuffle, working diligently to ensure a smooth transition and steady leadership for the country.
