M81, the establishment, scheduled to complete its opening by the year's conclusion
The M81 Motorway, a new major artery connecting Bang Yai and Kanchanaburi, is nearing completion and set to revolutionize travel in Thailand. Overseen by Director-General Apirat Chaiwongnoi, the department of Highways in Thailand has been leading the planning and construction of this ambitious project.
Spanning 96 kilometers and passing through four provinces – Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Ratchaburi, and Kanchanaburi – the M81 Motorway is designed to cut travel times from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi to a mere 50 minutes.
One of the key features of the M81 Motorway is its incorporation of intelligent traffic management systems. These systems include automatic toll collection via M-Flow, speed detection, and roadside assistance centres. The aim is to ensure smooth and efficient traffic flow, reducing congestion and improving overall travel experience.
During trials, which began on Dec 26, 2021, the M81 Motorway was available only on weekends from 3pm Friday to 9am Monday. During these trials, the motorway showed promising results, with the average daily usage approximating 35,000 vehicles. More notably, during the Songkran festival, the M81 Motorway managed to reduce congestion by up to 34% on some sections.
The M81 Motorway is not only about speed and efficiency. Eight toll gates have been strategically placed along the motorway for motorists, located at Bang Yai, Nakhon Chaisi, Nakhon Pathom, Tha Maka, Tha Muang, Kanchanaburi, and Srisathong.
With the construction almost complete, the M81 Motorway, featuring both six-lane and four-lane sections, is expected to be fully operational by the end of this year. Once operational, the M81 Motorway will offer a faster, more efficient, and safer travel option for millions of commuters, making a significant impact on travel in Thailand.
