Macau 2024 World Poker Tour Event Cancellation Announced
🔥 BREAKING NEWS: 🃏 Just three weeks before its scheduled start, the World Poker Tour (WPT) Macau has been axed! 🚫 This shocking announcement left players worldwide with major bummers as they were eagerly anticipating attending one of the year's biggest poker events in Macau. 🎴
The WPT released a brief statement on X, expressing regret for any inconvenience or sorrow caused to players worldwide, stating, "WPT, Wynn Macau, and Allied Gaming and Entertainment (AGAE) regret any inconvenience or disappointment for players from around the world who were planning to travel to Macau and play in the event."
This planned event would have been the first WPT outing in Macau, a location renowned as a prime destination for high-stakes poker, where tournament poker has been absent because of China's crackdown on online poker from 2018 to earlier this year. However, Macau started welcoming poker tournaments again with The Venetian Macau hosting the four-day Macau Masters which secured official approval from the Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau back in March.
🤨 So, why the sudden cancellation? No specific reason was mentioned, leaving poker enthusiasts guessing and wondering whether another poker event will happen in Macau in the future. The WPT did mention its commitment to working with Wynn Macau and AGAE for future partnerships, offering a glimmer of hope to poker lovers.
Macau's poker scene had a dry patch before returning this year, making the cancellation all the more bitter. On the bright side, the WPT has had two successful stops in Asia overall this year: WPT Cambodia and WPT Korea. Unfortunately, WPT Macau marks the second consecutive WPT stop in Asia to be called off. 👎
earlier this month, It was not a good month for WPT, as the "WPT Vietnam 2024 - Passport to the World Championship" event was also canceled. The cancellation came as a surprise, as a Hanoi media outlet, Dua Tin, reported that the event had not been authorized by the Department of Culture and Sports. This sudden cancellation left many players with non-refundable travel expenses hanging in the balance.
The WPT will face competition from the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP), which commenced yesterday. The WPT's $25,000 WPT Alpha8 Trifecta events are scheduled for June 25th, July 3rd (the day the WSOP Main Event starts), and July 10th at Wynn Las Vegas. The next WPT Main Tour stop in the U.S is the WPT bestbet Scramble in November 2024. 💡
