Cologne triumphs upon resuming Bundesliga competition in Mainz - Mainz experiences defeat as Cologne secures the victory

In a thrilling season opener, 1. FC Köln secured a 1-0 victory over FSV Mainz 05 at the sold-out Mewa Arena, marking their return to the Bundesliga.

New coach Lukas Kwasniok, donning a white home shirt with red stripes, made his debut in the top flight on a high note. However, the game was far from one-sided, with Köln struggling to get forward, largely ceding the initiative to Mainz.

Mainz 05's striker Nelson Weiper, who had resolved his disputes with the club before the league start, returned to the squad earlier than expected but remained inconspicuous during the game. Weiper, who recently signed a contract extension with Mainz until summer 2029, is currently the subject of "targeted discussions about an extension of his current contract."

The match was not without incident, as Mainz winger Paul Nebel received a red card for a foul in the 60th minute. Köln's Paul Nebel, who was not involved in the incident, was able to stay on the field.

The deadlock was broken in the 90th minute when Marius Bülter scored the winning goal for Köln, sending the home crowd into jubilation.

The game was played in front of 33,305 spectators, and despite some tense moments, it was a successful start for Köln in their return to the Bundesliga. However, the team suffered a blow in added time when Ragnar Ache had to leave the field with a knee injury.

Bo Henriksen, the head coach of FSV Mainz 05, whipped up the fans before the game, but it was Köln who emerged victorious in this closely contested encounter. Kwasniok, the new coach of 1. FC Köln, will be hoping to build on this win and lead his team to further success in the coming season.
