The Israeli military is preparing for a prolonged operation that is expected to extend into 2026, with the focus on Gaza. This comes amidst a flurry of shuttle diplomacy mediated by Qatar and Egypt, backed by the United States.
The latest truce proposal, presented amid increasing pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, both domestically and internationally, envisages an initial 60-day truce. This would be followed by a staggered hostage release, the freeing of some Palestinian prisoners, and provisions allowing for the entry of aid into Gaza.
Qatar has stated that the latest proposal is "almost identical" to an earlier version agreed by Israel, while Egypt has said the ball is now in Israel's court. However, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has not yet publicly commented on the truce plan, but stated that his country would accept "an agreement in which all the hostages are released at once and according to our conditions for ending the war."
Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Mardawi stated that Hamas had "opened the door wide to the possibility of reaching an agreement." Sources from Hamas and its ally Islamic Jihad stated that the latest proposal envisages the release of 10 hostages and 18 bodies from Gaza.
The Israeli military has already started operating in the neighborhoods of Zeitoun and Jabalia as part of the initial stages. The military's new phase of combat will involve a gradual, precise, and targeted operation in and around Gaza City, including areas where forces have not previously operated.
Over the past week, Israel has intensified air strikes and ground operations in Gaza, resulting in at least 21 deaths across Gaza on Wednesday, according to Gaza's civil defense agency. The United Nations considers the figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza to be reliable.
The offensive by Israel has resulted in the deaths of at least 62,064 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza. Defense Minister Israel Katz has approved a plan for the conquest of Gaza City and authorized the call-up of around 60,000 reservists.
The idea for the proposal of a temporary ceasefire in Gaza was developed by the United States and Qatar. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff recently met Qatar's Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to work on the proposal, with a 60-day ceasefire suggestion advocated by US businessman Bahbah around late May 2025.
Mediators are awaiting an official Israeli response on their latest proposal for a ceasefire. Gazan Shawg Al-Badri stated that a sack of flour, referred to as "white gold", is worth the whole world to her family, highlighting the urgent need for aid and relief in the region.
