Man in his mid-30s from Germany perishes in a fall in South Tyrol
In tragic news from the Ortler Alps, a 31-year-old German mountaineer has lost his life during a climbing tour in South Tyrol. The incident occurred on Monday morning at approximately 10:00 a.m., around the 3,851-meter-high Königspitze.
The mountain rescue service in Italy reported the accident, which took place at an altitude of approximately 3,500 meters. The exact cause of the mountaineer's fall remains unknown.
According to reports, the climber fell about 200 meters during the descent from the summit, resulting in his immediate death. His climbing partner, who was also brought down by helicopter, suffered a shock but is reported to be stable.
The deceased mountaineer spent the night in a biwak with his partner before the tragic accident.
South Tyrol, a region neighbouring the Ortler, the highest peak in the area at 3,905 meters, is a popular destination among German climbers. The region shares a border with Austria's Tyrol, another mountainous area.
The body of the deceased mountaineer was flown down to the valley by helicopter. The exact origin of the climber is now clear.
