In a surprising turn of events during the summer transfer window, Manchester United found themselves on the losing end of a potential deal for midfielder Conor Gallagher. The Englishman, who currently plies his trade at Atletico Madrid, has been a crucial asset for Diego Simeone's side since his arrival.

Atletico Madrid rejected an earlier loan offer for Gallagher from Crystal Palace, 10 days before Manchester United made their late attempt. This rejection seemed to have sealed the fate of the potential move, as Atletico Madrid declined Manchester United's surprise proposal in the final hours of the transfer window.

Gallagher's terrific stamina and work rate could have been beneficial to Manchester United's midfield, particularly in the absence of these qualities in Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte. His versatility, demonstrated by his deployment in multiple roles across midfield for Atletico Madrid, including as a no.8, a no.6, and on the left, would have added depth to United's midfield options.

Manchester United and Crystal Palace had both shown interest in bringing Gallagher back to the Premier League, but it was not to be. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid, despite Ruben Amorim's reported desperation to sign a new midfielder this summer, did not bring in any reinforcements on transfer deadline day.

Interestingly, Chelsea's decision to sell Gallagher to Atlético Madrid in August 2024 does not seem to have any connection with Manchester United. In fact, there is no evidence that Manchester United initiated negotiations for Gallagher with Atlético Madrid during the summer transfer window.

As for Manchester United, they have two goalkeepers in Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, with Senne Lammens joining as a new addition on transfer deadline day. The Red Devils will now look to strengthen other areas of their squad in their quest for success in the upcoming season.
