Manipur, a state in northeast India, is making significant strides in its digital governance journey with the launch of an AI-driven governance initiative. This landmark move was facilitated by the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Manipur, in partnership with the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Over 50 officers from various departments, including all the Deputy Commissioners of the State, participated in the two-day capacity-building workshop on "AI for Good Governance". The event, a key component of NeGD's Capacity Building initiative, aimed to enhance the understanding and adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in governance among senior officials of the government of Manipur.

The workshop, held to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence in governance in Manipur, reflected the state's collective commitment to digital transformation and AI-led innovation in public administration. Potsangbam Henry, Head of the State e-Mission Team (SeMT), Manipur, and other heads of state departments expressed their gratitude for the IT Department's leadership and NeGD's support.

Thokchom Kiran Kumar, Secretary (IT) in the Manipur government, emphasised the importance of AI capacity-building for enhancing governance. The workshop aimed to equip state officials with domain expertise, hands-on exposure, and proven best practices in AI governance.

The Manipur government is integrating artificial intelligence into areas such as legal case management and GIS-based habitation mapping of villages. This move is part of the government's commitment to adopting AI-driven solutions for transformative public service delivery.

Meanwhile, OpenAI, a leading AI research company, is planning to set up its first office in India, highlighting the rising adoption of AI. Additionally, Kyndrl, an AI-focused company, has committed $2.25 billion to establish an AI lab in India to boost technology development.

The AI-oriented events organised by the DIT, Manipur, underscore the state's forward-thinking approach towards efficient, transparent, and citizen-centric service delivery. The initiatives are expected to facilitate a more streamlined and technology-driven governance system in Manipur, ultimately benefiting its citizens.
