In the world of PC gaming, keeping up with the latest technology can be a challenge, especially when it comes to upscaling technologies like AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). While game developers don't always keep their upscalers up-to-date, there's a new method that AMD users can use to get the latest optimizations and quality updates: DLL swapping.

This technique, which has worked on the Nvidia side since DLSS 2.0 was released, allows users to manually upgrade their games from FSR 3.1 to FSR 4. The process involves replacing the game's FSR 3.1 DLL files with the new ones from AMD's FSR SDK 2.0.

The FSR SDK 2.0 comes with three internal DLLs: "amd_fidelityfx_framegeneration_dx12.dll", "amd_fidelityfx_loader_dx12.dll", and "amd_fidelityfx_upscaler_dx12.dll". To upgrade a game, users need to rename the loader DLL file to "amd_fidelityfx_dx12" and drop all three DLLs in the game's DLL directory.

However, it's important to note that FSR 4 DLL swapping is technically a mod and doesn't always work without bugs. There have been very few user reports of game crashes from upgrading to FSR 4 with this method. Also, FSR 4 and FSR 3.1 DLLs cannot coexist, so it is necessary to delete the FSR 3.1 DLLs before swapping.

AMD has promised that future Adrenalin updates will add FSR 4 support to specific games independently of game developers. But until then, DLL swapping is likely to be the primary method of upgrading FSR 3.1 games to FSR 4 and beyond. This method has been demonstrated working in games like Horizon Zero Dawn: Remastered.

It's worth noting that no PC game developers have officially released FSR 4 DLL files for AMD users to manually upgrade FSR 3.1 games to FSR 4. Also, some users have reported that FSR 4 won't trigger in Linux on RX 9000 series hardware. This trick won't make FSR 4 run on older Radeon graphics cards older than the RX 9000 series.

Remember, this method requires a certain level of technical knowledge and may not work with all games. Always back up your files before attempting any modifications.
