Manufacturers and suppliers urge European Union for financial aid to boost electric vehicle expansion

The European automotive industry is calling for more ambitious, long-term, and consistent policies to secure its future competitiveness and sustainability. This appeal comes as the world has significantly changed since the current direction was set, necessitating an adaptation of the EU's automotive sector strategy.

In an open letter, the heads of the automotive associations ACEA and CLEPA have requested the European Commission's attention during the strategic dialogue meeting on September 12. Ursula von der Leyen, who is negotiating with the industry on behalf of the Commission, will be present at this meeting.

The industry leaders have highlighted that innovation, quality employment, and supply chain resilience could be put at risk without such policies. They fear that the transition without policies enhancing European competitiveness may risk hollowing out the industrial base.

The strategy for the automotive sector should not solely focus on CO2 targets for new vehicles, they argue. Instead, a comprehensive approach is needed that includes demand-side incentives for electric vehicles (EVs) and the promotion of multiple drivetrain technologies to boost EV demand.

The automotive associations have emphasised the need for these policies to be in place to ensure a smooth transition towards a sustainable and competitive European automotive industry. They believe that such measures are crucial to maintaining Europe's position as a global leader in the automotive sector.
