ManySyrian refugees have decided to leave Germany.
In a recent development, Janine Lietmeyer, a board member of World Vision Germany, has reported significant challenges faced by Syrian refugees in parts of the country outside Damascus' city center, following a visit in August.
According to data from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, by the end of August 2021, 1,867 Syrian refugees were supported by national programs to return from Germany to Syria. This figure, however, does not include refugees who have returned voluntarily without claiming state funding.
The return of Syrian refugees to their homeland has been a gradual process since the fall of Bashar al-Assad on December 7th, 2019. Refugees have been returning from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq, but the overall number returning to Germany remains relatively low.
Last year, 83,150 former Syrian nationals were naturalized in Germany, a significant number reflecting the large Syrian refugee population in the country. However, no corresponding data is available for this year.
Families returning to Syria face challenges in re-establishing themselves in their hometowns. The relative normality in Damascus' city center contrasts with the challenges in other parts of Syria, where ongoing pressure on refugees continues. No specific information is available regarding the number of Syrian refugees facing pressure in Lebanon or Turkey.
It's important to note that national programs in Germany provide funding for returns to Syria, while voluntary departures from Germany to Syria occur without claiming state funding. By the end of May 2021, 804 Syrian refugees had utilized state-funded support to return to Syria.
Between the beginning of January and the end of August 2021, 17,650 people from Syria applied for asylum with the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) in Germany. This figure underscores the ongoing need for support and assistance for Syrian refugees, both in Germany and in their homeland.
In conclusion, while some Syrian refugees are returning to their homeland with the support of national programs, many continue to seek asylum in Germany. The challenges faced by refugees in Syria, particularly outside Damascus, remain a concern, and ongoing support is needed to address these issues.
