Maple Forest Habitat and Growth Requirements
The bigleaf maple tree (Acer macrophyllum) is a stunning spectacle of nature, particularly cherished in the cool, moist climates of the Pacific Northwest. This tree, with its impressive size and vibrant autumn colours, is a favourite among garden enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
A master gardener and docent at the San Francisco Botanical Garden, Teo Spengler, shares insights into this remarkable tree. The bigleaf maple tree is native to the Pacific Northwest, extending from southern Alaska through British Columbia to northern California, and the Olympic Peninsula.
Bigleaf maples thrive in areas with partial shade, preferring deep, well-drained soils with abundant moisture. They do not tolerate poor soils or deep shade, but they can grow in upland sites provided there is deep soil and abundant moisture. In wetter areas like river terraces, flood plains, and seepage areas, the bigleaf maple tree feels right at home.
One of the most distinctive features of the bigleaf maple tree is its size. Its leaves, the largest of any maple leaf, can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) long and 9 or 10 inches (25 cm) wide. The leaves have five lobes and cutouts up to three-quarters of the leaf length.
Bigleaf maple trees are slow to mature, starting to produce seed only when they are some 10 years old. Once mature, these trees can grow up to 36 inches (91 cm) a year, making them a rapid grower among maple trees.
As autumn arrives, the bigleaf maple tree puts on a spectacular show, its leaves turning golden and orange before falling off. Even in winter, when it has lost its leaves, the bigleaf maple tree continues to provide moderate shade, making it a year-round asset in any garden.
The bigleaf maple tree is best grown from seed, and it prefers cool to mild winters, such as USDA zones 5 through 9. With the right care and conditions, this tree can become a beautiful and long-lasting addition to any garden.
