Marching in Support: Holy Cross Journey to 2024's Life March
College of the Holy Cross Students and Priests Participate in Pro-Life Events
Students and priests from the College of the Holy Cross embarked on a journey to Washington D.C. in January, participating in several pro-life events. The trip began on Thursday, January 18, with a Mass in the chapel of the new Jesuit community residence.
After Mass, the group, which included seven students and two priests, boarded two vans for the road trip to the nation's capital. The students were led by co-chairs Kate Wheeler '25 and Fiona McCarthy '25, with Father Jim Hayes serving as the group's faculty advisor.
On Friday, the students attended Life Fest at the D.C. Armory. This event, filled with pro-life exhibits and speakers, provided an opportunity for the students to learn more about the pro-life movement and network with like-minded individuals.
On Saturday, they attended the Cardinal O'Connor Conference on Life at Georgetown University. The conference, which focused on the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death, featured keynote speakers and workshops on various pro-life topics. Margaret "Peggy" Hartshorn, Ph.D., the former President and now Chair of the Board of Heartbeat International, was present during the conference.
The following day, the students and priests participated in the 2024 National March for Life. Despite the low temperatures, spirits were high as they joined thousands of others in advocating for the protection of the unborn.
Meanwhile, on campus, Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., announced the start of the Mission Priority Examen on September 14. This Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) initiative is a reflection process designed to help institutions of higher learning discern their mission and purpose.
In other news, Rev. William R. Campbell, S.J., '87, Vice President for Mission, has been appointed as the director of the Eastern Point Retreat House. He will be leaving Holy Cross on March 13. Additionally, Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., announced his retirement at the end of the 2020-2021 academic year on September 24. Along with this announcement, he also shared other changes that would take effect at the college.
As the College of the Holy Cross continues to engage in pro-life activities and reflect on its mission, the community looks forward to the future with hope and determination.
