Mariandale's Spring Break Intensive Course
In the final week of spring break, a group of Holy Cross students, including Sophia Mariani '26 and Caroline Kramer '26, embarked on the Spring Break Immersion Program. The program, designed to foster relationships and perform service work in various communities across the country, saw Sophia placed at The Center at Mariandale in Ossining, New York.
During the program, Sophia's group participated in a range of activities. They engaged in gardening, discussions on environment and sustainability, and undertook a community garden revitalisation project in Yonkers. The group also extended their efforts to help those in need, participating in the Midnight Run, an organisation that provides food, clothing, and other necessities to homeless people in Manhattan.
In addition, the group prepared and served food for people in need at soup kitchens and food pantries in New York. They also spent time at The Center at Mariandale, a facility offering hands-on service to the hungry and homeless, sustainable gardening, and engagement with advocacy organisations.
The week concluded with a unique twist as each group was encouraged to dress in a costume of their choice for a group dinner. After the dinner, students gathered to share their experiences from the program.
While details about the specific students who participated in the program at The Center at Mariandale are not publicly listed, it's worth noting that Caroline Kramer '26, from East Providence, RI, was also involved. Caroline majors in English and Sociology at Holy Cross and is actively involved in various college activities, including Gateways Orientation, College Choir, Hall Council, and The Spire at Holy Cross.
Outside of college, Caroline enjoys watching Mamma Mia, with "Can't Take My Eyes off You" by Frankie Valli being her favourite song. Another student, Daniel Maddigan '24, expressed fondness for his childhood bedroom.
For students interested in participating in similar programs, Holy Cross offers a $5,000 Spring Break program in impoverished countries. These experiences provide students with opportunities to make a difference while growing personally and academically.
