Mascot Chaos in Oregon: Duck's Head Unexpectedly Detaches During Field Sprint, Causing Bizarre Scene
In a bizarre turn of events during the opening game of the 2023 season, the Oregon Ducks' beloved mascot, Puddles, lost its head once again. The incident occurred during the pregame run-on-the-field, as Puddles, dressed like football legend Deion Sanders, attempted to break a clock sign.
The costume provider had dressed Puddles in a white hat and sunglasses, reminiscent of Sanders' iconic style, for the game against Montana State. This was the first start for quarterback Dante Moore this season, and he led Oregon with a impressive 213 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Puddles has a history of such embarrassing on-field incidents, and this is not the first time it has lost its head. In fact, this has happened multiple times over the years. In a separate incident during the game against Colorado, Puddles, again dressed as Deion Sanders, had a standoff with the football legend.
Dante Moore, who has learned from quarterbacks who have played at a high level, as stated by Head Coach Dan Lanning, acknowledged the pressure he could be under following the draft of Dillon Gabriel by the Browns and Nix's entry into his second season with the Broncos. However, he has shown maturity and leadership, and expressed his hunger to perform well.
Moore also expressed confidence in the Oregon offense, stating that they are talented and ready to compete. The team's confidence paid off, as No. 7 Oregon won against Montana State, 59-13. The clock that Puddles was attempting to break had the word "Prime" on its side.
After losing its head, a staffer chased after headless Puddles with the head. Puddles was first debuted by Oregon in the 1940s, making it a long-standing tradition for the university. Dan Lanning had previously stated that Moore would help Oregon down the road after learning from Dillon Gabriel.
This incident is a reminder that even in the world of sports, things don't always go as planned. But for Oregon, with a talented quarterback and a determined mascot, the future looks promising.
