Mater Dei and St. John Bosco Kick Off Trinity League Season with Dramatic Wins

The Trinity League football season has started with a bang, as Mater Dei High School and St. John Bosco both emerged victorious in their opening games.

On Friday night, Mater Dei, ranked No. 1, made their home debut against Ft. Lauderdale Aquinas. Despite facing a 3-0 deficit in the first quarter, Mater Dei responded with 26 consecutive points to secure a 26-23 victory. Ryan Hopkins, the new quarterback for Mater Dei, threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter, while Chris Henry Jr. caught two of them, covering 22 and 82 yards respectively. Gavin Honore also had a 62-yard touchdown reception.

The game was not without its challenges, as a lightning storm caused a one-hour postponement. Mater Dei's defense, led by Danny Lang who had two pass breakups, held strong throughout the match. However, the Monarchs were penalized 13 times for 140 yards through three quarters.

In another Trinity League game, St. John Bosco won their opening game with a score of 31-0. The game was halted at halftime due to lightning, but the Braves dominated the first half, leading 26-3. St. John Bosco's opponent for next week is Bishop Montgomery, who has lost five transfers to ineligibility.

Meanwhile, Orange Lutheran, another Trinity League team, won their opening game in Florida with a score of 17-13. Nico Bland was the recipient of two touchdown passes by Reagan Loki in the game. Unfortunately, three other Trinity League teams - Santa Margarita, JSerra, and Servite - all lost their nonleague openers on Friday.

Eric Sondheimer, a well-known sports journalist, follows the Mater Dei high school football team closely. The Monarchs' home game against Bishop Montgomery is expected to result in a running clock, while Bishop Montgomery's visit to "Cathedral" next week will likely lead to a game with a flowing clock timing style.

As the Trinity League season continues, fans can expect more exciting games and fierce competition among these top teams.
