In a dramatic turn of events, Istanbul's Beyoğlu Mayor, İnan Güney, has been temporarily removed from office on August 19, following a series of police raids on August 15. The raids, which were part of a widening investigation into the Istanbul Municipality, targeted Güney, his adviser Yiğit Öğuz Duman, and several figures tied to a municipal subsidiary.

The focus of the raids was on cultural and media affairs within the municipal subsidiary. Güney, a mayor from the Republican People's Party, vehemently denied all charges, insisting he had no dealings with the companies implicated in the probe.

The suspension of Güney as a temporary measure did not come with immediate details about an interim mayor for Istanbul. However, on August 22, Hakan Tartan was appointed as the acting mayor of Istanbul by the city council, replacing Güney.

This development is not an isolated incident. In recent months, several opposition mayors have been arrested over graft allegations. Notably, Istanbul's Mayor Ekrem İmamoglu has been in prison since March. The arrest and removal of Güney further escalate the ongoing corruption investigations that have engulfed the Istanbul Municipality.

The fallout from these investigations has been significant. More than 100 senior municipal officials have also been imprisoned, highlighting the scope and depth of the corruption probes.

As the situation continues to unfold, the people of Istanbul await the outcome of these investigations and the appointment of a permanent successor to Güney. The future of the city's leadership remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the corruption investigations have shaken the foundations of Istanbul's political landscape.
