Melissa Koby: Breaking Barriers with Art at the 2025 US Open
Melissa Koby, a rising star in the art world, has been chosen as the theme artist for the 2025 US Open Grand Slam tournament. Koby's artwork will pay tribute to Althea Gibson, a legendary figure in tennis history, and the path she paved for Black women athletes.
The 2025 US Open theme is "75 Years of Breaking Barriers," honouring Gibson's groundbreaking legacy. Koby's artwork will feature layered paper and faceless figures, symbolizing the layers of resilience and determination that Gibson embodied.
The artwork will also include several iconic elements, such as the Statue of Liberty, Arthur Ashe Stadium, and Tiffany trophies. Koby intentionally chooses her art style to invite interpretation and emphasize representation over appearance.
Koby's inspiration for this project comes from Venus and Serena Williams, who she believes are inspiring for young Black girls. She was particularly drawn to their use of beads, which she incorporates into her artwork.
Koby's late grandmother was a source of inspiration for her artwork, particularly in telling the story of Althea Gibson. Her grandmother dropped out of school and never had the chance to fulfill her dreams, a reality that resonates with Koby's own journey as an artist.
Koby started creating paper art at home with a stencil knife and later invested in a laser cutter. She was raised to pursue traditional careers but is grateful for the timing that allowed her to hone her craft as an artist.
Tournament fans attending the 2025 US Open will be greeted by Koby's artwork, in the form of posters and banners, throughout the venue. Koby hopes to display her US Open piece as a life-sized installation and scale her work for gallery spaces.
