Memorial Day Opening: Historically Significant Sites in Munich East and Eastern District Available for Visit

On September 14, the city of Munich will open its doors to a treasure trove of historical gems, as part of the Day of Open Heritage. This annual event invites visitors to explore a myriad of priceless and invaluable sites, including the Bajuwarenhof Kirchheim and several churches, such as St. Aegidius and St. Stephanus Putzbrunn.

The Bajuwarenhof Kirchheim, a project for living archaeology of the early Middle Ages, will open its gates simultaneously with the summer festival of the association. This reconstructed agricultural farmstead from the 6th to 8th centuries offers a unique glimpse into the past. Visitors can explore several residential and commercial buildings, an experimental field, and various gardens, where grain, vegetables, herbs, berries, flax, and dye plants are grown. Guided tours will be available from 11 am to 5 pm.

St. Aegidius, a Romanesque chapel north of the guesthouse Gut Keferloh, was built as a purpose-built structure in 1173 and also served as a trading and storage space. Frescoes from the 12th century are preserved on the apse and choir walls. On the Day of Open Heritage, St. Aegidius will open its doors from 10 am to 4 pm.

St. Stephanus Putzbrunn, located at Glonner Straße 22, houses a Baroque hall church. The apostle paintings on the balcony were created around 1723, and the organ was crafted by Franz Borgias Maerz in 1885. The high altar was built in 1725. The church is flanked by Stephanus and Laurentius of Rome. On the Day of Open Heritage, the church will open from 12 pm to 6 pm.

The organization behind the reconstruction of a medieval farming settlement in Kirchheim is the "Förderverein Pfahlbau Kirchheim." This group has been working since 2003 in cooperation with the city of Kirchheim and the Bajuwarenhof Kirchheim association.

For those interested in a more active exploration, Michael Förster from the Catholic Parish of St. Peter and Paul Trudering is offering a "Bike Memorial Tour" on September 14th. This tour will discover seven field crosses in and around Kirchtrudering and Straßtrudering.

Thousands of monuments will open their doors during the event, offering a unique opportunity to delve into Munich's rich history. The motto for this year's event is "Priceless: invaluable or irreplaceable?" A question that echoes through the halls and fields of these historical sites, inviting us to appreciate and cherish our past.
