Menendez Brothers Denied Parole After Three Decades

After a contentious hearing that transfixed the nation, both Lyle and Erik Menendez have been denied parole for the murder of their parents, which took place 36 years ago on Aug. 20, 1989.

The parole decisions for the brothers, who were found guilty of the brutal slayings of their parents in one of the country's most exclusive enclaves, close off one path to freedom for them.

Lyle Menendez's parole hearing took place on video, where commissioners found a remarkable level of callousness and disregard for others in the murders. The panel also criticized Lyle for a pattern of recent misconduct in prison, particularly for using cellphones inside the facilities.

Erik Menendez's hearing took place the day before Lyle's, and the panel found that he should remain behind bars for at least three more years. The denial was handed down after an 11-hour hearing.

The brothers can try for parole again in three years, but in the meantime, they can continue their efforts to get a judge to reduce their convictions or grant them a new trial. Erik Menendez is currently fighting for a pardon from California Governor Gavin Newsom for the release of Lyle Menendez.

The case of the Menendez brothers has transfixed the country for its lurid violence and the extent of the abuse that their father inflicted on them, which was revealed through documentaries, docudramas, and works of journalism.

The family of Lyle and Erik Menendez released a statement after Lyle's hearing, vowing to continue fighting for their release. The brothers can also seek clemency from California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

An audio recording from Erik Menendez's hearing appeared on the internet, causing a contentious moment in Lyle's hearing. The parole board released the audio from Erik's hearing legally.

Despite the denial of parole, Lyle Menendez was praised for showing potential for change but faulted for persistent antisocial personality traits. The brothers will continue to serve their sentences in prison, with the hope that they can one day demonstrate the necessary changes to be considered for parole again.
