Mercedes-Benz's New Product: Could It Shake Up the Market?
In a bid to regain market momentum, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new fully electric GLC SUV in Munich. The new model, known as the GLC 400 4MATIC, marks the beginning of Mercedes' new electric series and is expected to hit the market soon.
Sales of the GLC, the best-selling model at Mercedes-Benz, have been steady, but the company has faced challenges in other areas. S-Class sales dropped by 25% and E-Class sales decreased by 15% in Q2 and 8% in H1. Overall, sales of passenger cars and vans decreased by 8% in the first half of the year compared to the previous year, a trend that Mercedes needs to reverse.
Industry expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer considers the new GLC an important step for Mercedes, as it serves the broad mid-range and moves away from focusing too much on the luxury segment. Dudenhöffer expects this strategy to continue in the next two quarters, with Mercedes "baking small cakes" rather than relying on a single high-end model.
The GLC 400 4MATIC is the first model of the new electric series to hit the market. Based on preliminary figures and projections, the top speed of the GLC 400 4MATIC is 210 km/h and the range is over 700 kilometers. The estimated price for the first GLC of the new electric series is around €73,000, with an entry-level model possibly around €60,000.
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius needs to deliver a new, compelling narrative to shareholders and the capital market. The profit margin in the Mercedes Car division fell to 3.2%, and the company's earnings have more than halved due to tariffs and lower sales figures. However, DER AKTIONÄR currently favors BMW in the automotive segment.
The new GLC features a newly designed, brand-defining chrome radiator grille. Sales of the new electric GLC will start before Christmas, with the first deliveries in Europe expected in the spring. The prices for the combustion engine GLC start at around 54,000 euros.
The GLC and CLA will play a crucial role in Mercedes' new narrative. The new CLA, expected to launch in key markets like China in 2026, is crucial for Mercedes. Dudenhöffer considers the similarity between combustion engines and E-models at Mercedes a positive development, as strict differentiation between the two belongs to the past.
The Neue Klasse is expected to provide Mercedes with new momentum. This new approach promises to bring fresh energy to the brand, as Mercedes navigates the challenges of the evolving automotive industry. With the launch of the new GLC and the upcoming CLA, Mercedes-Benz is poised to offer compelling new options to consumers in the coming years.
