Merkur Group to Acquire Gambling Banks in Lower Saxony on September 1, 2025: What's the Date for the Agreement Signing?

In a recent announcement on September 1, 2025, a yet-to-be-identified company expressed its intention to manage the operational aspects of ten casinos in Lower Saxony, pending a court decision that would invalidate the license award to the Merkur Group. However, a search for this company has yielded no results at present.

The exact timeline for this potential takeover remains uncertain, as the court proceedings and the final signing of the purchase agreement are yet to be concluded.

Among the proposed changes, the casinos in Bad Pyrmont and Norderney are slated for relocation. The former is planned to be moved to Hameln, while the latter is set to find its new home in Stuhr.

The future of the employees in these establishments is currently shrouded in uncertainty. While the Merkur Group had initially pledged to maintain the employment of around 400 employees, with the potential for an increase to 600, the security of these jobs could be in jeopardy. This is due to the fact that employees would need to reapply to the Merkur Group if their positions are to be transferred along with the casinos.

In the event of immediate or short-term relocations, job losses could occur. The company aiming to take over the casinos has expressed a commitment to ensuring a "orderly and responsible transition" in the interests of both customers and employees, should the lawsuit against the license award to the Merkur Group ultimately be rejected.

Until then, the fate of the casinos and their employees in Lower Saxony remains uncertain. The court's decision will play a decisive role in shaping the future of the gaming industry in the region.
