Merz set to assume Chancellorship on May 6th
Germany is stepping closer to forming a new federal government, as key parties prepare to vote on the coalition agreement. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) will hold their vote from April 26 to April 29, while the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) will make their decision on April 28, at a small party conference.
The coalition agreement, a 144-page contract, requires a majority of votes and a participation of at least 20% of the members in the digital vote for approval. If approved, the CDU's candidate for Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, is expected to be elected by the Bundestag on May 6.
Friedrich Merz's election as Chancellor is contingent upon the approval of the coalition agreement by the CDU and its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), as well as the SPD. If elected, Merz will take the post of Chancellor of the CDU following his election and subsequent appointment by the Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
The CSU board has already approved the coalition agreement, and the Bundestag election of Friedrich Merz as Chancellor and the swearing-in of his cabinet are scheduled for May 6. The German Parliament's President, Julia Klöckner, is preparing for the election date.
Meanwhile, the election of a new Chancellor is not the only news making headlines in Germany. Tens of thousands of people have already paid the Venice fee, and a helicopter tour operator has suspended its operations following a fatal crash.
As the countdown to the new government begins, the focus remains on ensuring a smooth transition and a strong, stable coalition that can lead Germany forward.
