Message from La Mirada Mayor John Lewis on Veterans Day
La Mirada, a vibrant city in California, is inviting its community to join in a series of festive events and heartfelt tributes this holiday season and Veterans Day.
Mayor John Lewis extends an open invitation to the community to celebrate the holidays with a live concert, food vendors, and family-friendly activities. The exact date and venue for these holiday festivities have yet to be announced.
In a separate note, the city is also honouring its active members of the Armed Forces through the Blue Star program. This initiative allows families who have a loved one serving to display flags at their homes. The Military Banner program, which showcases the names of local service members along Rosecrans Avenue, will soon retire banners for those who have recently completed their service.
Veterans Day is another significant occasion for La Mirada. On Monday, November 11, starting at 10:30 a.m., a Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at the La Mirada Civic Center Plaza. The event will be hosted by La Mirada Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9148, with the chairman yet to be publicly specified. The community is encouraged to honour local veterans and military families on this day.
Meanwhile, the city council has been in the spotlight recently. An article published in "City News" on May 24, 2022, discussed Councilman Andrew Sarega's behaviour at city council meetings. The article titled "La Mirada Councilman Sarega Has Poor Attendance Record; Father Removed From Latest Meeting" highlighted Councilman Sarega's poor attendance record and his father, Ion "John" Sarega, who often speaks at public comment at these meetings. It was reported that Councilman Sarega can often be seen fidgeting at these meetings.
Despite these events, the city continues to express its gratitude to all veterans who have valiantly served the nation. The Eternal Flame Memorial in the La Mirada Civic Center proudly engraves the names of 28 residents who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
In addition to these events, La Mirada has also planned various activities for the summer, with the Salute to Veterans Celebration taking place on Saturday, November 9, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Neff Park. More details about these summer activities will be announced in due course.
As the holiday season approaches, La Mirada invites everyone to join in the celebration and to remember and honour the city's veterans and military families.
