Luciano Pavarotti's Love for Pasta: A Backstage Secret

Luciano Pavarotti, the legendary 'King of the High Cs', had a lifelong penchant for pasta, a passion that was not hidden from his colleagues and crew. According to reports by Page Six, this love for Italian cuisine was evident during Pavarotti's performances at the Metropolitan Opera, as well as his UK tour in 2004.

During his UK tour, Pavarotti was accompanied by his personal butler, Giuseppe. The rider called for indulgent amounts of Italian foods, including pasta, parmesan, and salami. Simeon Rosset, Pavarotti's personal butler during this tour, confirmed Pavarotti's preference for Italian food, specifically fresh pasta and a certain type of Italian tomatoes.

Backstage at the Metropolitan Opera, Pavarotti kept a bowl of pasta hidden just off stage to satisfy his mid-performance snacking habits. According to the Met Opera's general manager, Peter Gelb, Pavarotti would wander off stage between arias to have a snack of pasta. This habit was revealed during a backstage tour of the New York building.

Rosset also converted a room next to Pavarotti's bedroom into a small kitchen to accommodate Pavarotti's dietary needs. During the tour, there were three roast chickens and fresh pasta available at all times. However, the specific type of pasta that Pavarotti preferred during the UK tour in 2004, or during his performances at the Metropolitan Opera, was not specified.

The article humorously suggests trying to season one's vocal cords with spag-liacci, a play on words combining spaghetti and the operatic character, Pagliacci. However, it's unclear whether Pavarotti's diet was the secret to his success. In a later interview, Pavarotti himself claimed that he needed some sugar for energy during performances.

In 1976, Pavarotti stated that his singing had improved since embarking on a diet. This suggests that Pavarotti may have been mindful of his diet throughout his career, not just during his performances. However, it's unclear whether Pavarotti's dietary habits changed over time.

Despite the lack of specific details about Pavarotti's favorite pasta dish, one thing is clear: Luciano Pavarotti's love for pasta was as much a part of his performances as his legendary voice. Whether it was a secret cache of pasta in the wings or a bowl hidden backstage, Pavarotti's pasta habits added a unique flavour to his legendary career.
