Mets summoning rising star Brandon Sproat for his first MLB appearance amidst their playoff drive
The New York Mets are bolstering their starting rotation as they aim to secure a postseason spot, with the promotion of Brandon Sproat from Triple-A Syracuse. Sproat, a right-handed pitcher drafted by the Mets in the second round in 2023, will make his debut against the Cincinnati Reds this weekend.
Sproat has impressed in Syracuse, posting a 2.59 ERA in his past 11 starts. His impressive form has not gone unnoticed, and he will now get the opportunity to showcase his talents at the major league level.
The Mets have a crucial series against the Reds coming up, with David Peterson, Jonah Tong, and Brandon Sproat scheduled to face the Reds' pitching staff this weekend. The Reds are one of the teams chasing the Mets for the NL's third wild card, but their deficit is currently five games.
The Mets are in a position to potentially bury the Reds in the race, and Tong and Sproat will be pitching in games that carry extra weight. Tong, a 22-year-old pitcher, made his debut for the Mets last Friday, holding the Marlins to one earned run over five innings with six strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Sean Manaea had been told he is pitching on Monday, but it's possible he will now move back a day. If Manaea pitches on Monday in Philadelphia, he would open the Mets' four-game series against the division leader. However, the team is still to resolve a next step for Kodai Senga, who must give his consent for a minor league assignment.
Senga and Manaea have struggled in the Mets' starting rotation, and the team is auditioning pitchers for a potential postseason rotation. McLean, a 24-year-old right-hander, has been impressive in his first four MLB starts for the Mets, holding a record of 4-0 and an ERA of 1.37. McLean's 28 strikeouts are the most in franchise history for a pitcher in his first four starts.
In his latest outing against the Tigers, McLean held them to two earned runs over six innings. If McLean pitches on Monday in Philadelphia, he could open the Mets' four-game series against the Phillies, who currently lead the Mets by 5 1⁄2 games for first place.
The Mets have also added to their pitching staff, claiming pitcher Wander Suero off waivers from the Braves. Suero has appeared in five games this season and has pitched to an ERA of 11.37.
Brandon Sproat has a familiarity with the Mets, having spent much of spring training with the team. As the Mets push towards the playoffs, the addition of Sproat to their starting rotation could prove to be a crucial move.
