Micah Lasher files candidacy for United States Congress position
In the heart of Manhattan, the political landscape is shifting as Micah Lasher, a local Assembly Member, has taken the first step towards running for Congress in the 12th District. This move comes after the retirement announcement of long-standing Representative Jerry Nadler.
Lasher has filed with the Federal Election Commission to create a campaign committee named "Micah Lasher for Congress." Rob Gottheim, Nadler's former chief of staff, will serve as Lasher's campaign treasurer.
Lasher is the second candidate to create a campaign committee for the 12th Congressional District, following nonprofit founder Liam Elkind. The West Side of Manhattan, often referred to as a liberal godfather in politics, is expected to witness a crowded election to replace Nadler.
Nadler's retirement has left a highly anticipated void in Manhattan politics. Some potential candidates have taken themselves out of the running, such as Lina Khan, Linda Rosenthal, Liz Krueger, Gale Brewer, Chelsea Clinton, and Lindsey Boylan. However, the field of possible candidates still includes Cynthia Nixon, Whitney Tilson, Tali Farhadian Weinstein, and Carolyn Maloney, along with Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy.
There is an opinion that Lasher is the heir apparent to Rep. Jerry Nadler due to his local political standing. The run for Congress by Lasher is expected to be expensive and competitive, given the Democratic primary for the 12th Congressional District.
The 12th Congressional District, historically a Democratic stronghold, will allow Lasher to begin raising funds for his run. The district, located in Manhattan, has been a significant player in New York politics for many years.
As the race heats up, it remains to be seen who will emerge as the frontrunner in the 12th Congressional District. The election promises to be a fascinating spectacle, with a diverse field of candidates vying for the seat left vacant by Rep. Jerry Nadler.
