Michael Owen launches passionate defense, claiming superiority over Wayne Rooney in their shared football career history
Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney, two English footballing legends, have shared a unique bond since their early days on the pitch. At just 17 years old, Owen made a name for himself as a prolific scorer, breaking records and establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with.
In the 1997/98 Premier League season, Owen scored an impressive 18 goals before his 18th birthday, a feat that earned him the Golden Boot. This early success saw him quickly become Liverpool's main striker and even the youngest player to score a Premier League hat-trick.
Rooney, on the other hand, was just beginning his career at 16 and had not yet reached the level of scoring impact that Owen had achieved. However, Rooney would go on to surpass Owen in some areas, most notably in his consistency and longevity.
One area where Rooney outshone Owen was in their performances for England. Both players scored as teenagers, but Rooney's impact for the national team was sustained over a longer period. In contrast, Owen's international career was hindered by injuries.
In their opening 7 seasons, Owen scored 117 goals compared to Rooney's 80. However, it was in individual accolades where they truly differed. At the age of 18, Owen scored 18 goals again, won the Golden Boot, and came 4th in The Ballon d'Or, while Rooney scored 9.
Owen, in a BBC post, stated that at the age of 17, he scored 18 Premier League goals and won the Golden Boot, while Rooney scored 6. This statement underscores the stark contrast in their early careers, with Owen enjoying a meteoric rise to fame while Rooney was still finding his feet.
Fast forward to the present, and both Owen's former clubs Liverpool and Real Madrid will face off in the Champions League at Anfield on November 4. Meanwhile, England will play Andorra in a World Cup qualifier at Villa Park on Saturday.
Despite the differences in their careers, the similarities between Owen and Rooney are undeniable. Both players have left an indelible mark on the game, and their rivalry serves as a testament to the competitive spirit that drives football forward.
