Michigan State demonstrates superiority across the board, triumphing over Western Michigan in the opening game of the season.
In a highly anticipated season-opener, Michigan State University showcased their dominance over Western Michigan University, securing a 23-6 victory on August 29, 2025. The triumph marked the Spartans' 26th consecutive win against nonconference opponents, a streak that dates back to 1999.
The game began with Michigan State scoring on their first two drives, setting the tone for the rest of the match. Brandon Tullis kicked off the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown run, followed by Aidan Chiles' touchdown pass to Nick Marsh, which extended the lead to 14-0 in the second quarter.
Chiles, the Spartans' quarterback, had a solid performance, throwing for 155 yards and a touchdown, while also running for 26 yards. His touchdown pass to Marsh was a crucial moment in the game, as it increased Michigan State's lead and seemed to dampen Western Michigan's spirits.
On the other side, Western Michigan struggled offensively, managing only 29 yards rushing throughout the game. Quarterback Brady Jones, a transfer from Riverside Community College, completed 11 of 23 passes for 97 yards and one interception. The backup quarterback, Alessio Milivojevic, replaced Jones after an injury but was intercepted by Tate Hallock and returned for a touchdown late in the game, providing Western Michigan's only score.
Michigan State's defense was relentless, forcing Western Michigan to turn the ball over on downs three times and registering a safety with 8:01 left in the third quarter. Makhi Frazier, in his first career start for the Spartans, rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown, while Braki Frazier added another touchdown with a 9-yard run, increasing the lead to 21-0 with 1:50 remaining in the first half.
Western Michigan had an opportunity to score late in the third quarter but missed a 46-yard field goal, keeping the score at 21-6. The Spartans' defense held firm, denying Western Michigan any further points until the final minutes of the game.
Despite the lopsided score, Western Michigan fans can take solace in the fact that their team has not been defeated by Michigan State since 1921, a streak that spans over 100 years. The Broncos will undoubtedly be eager to end this losing streak in their next encounter.
