Michigan's Casinos, Sportsbooks, and Online Gaming Platforms Earn State Over Half a Billion Dollars
Michigan's Gaming Industry Shines in Record-Breaking Year
Michigan's gaming industry has been a significant contributor to the state's economy, particularly in 2024, which marked a record-setting year. According to the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), the state benefited from over half a billion dollars ($501.4 million) from its commercial and tribal gaming industries.
The growth in the state's gaming sector can be attributed to its legal iGaming market. Online gaming, including revenue from tribal casinos with iGaming partnerships with commercial operators, generated almost $388.5 million in associated state taxes. This figure includes taxes ranging from 20% to 28% on online commercial and tribal iGaming, and 9.65% on commercial online sportsbooks.
The three brick-and-mortar casinos in Detroit - MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown - accounted for $99.8 million of the state gaming tax receipts. Retail sports betting at these casinos added about $655K to the state's revenue.
In 2024, Michigan ranked fourth among commercial gaming states in the country, behind Nevada, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The state's gaming tax receipts were so high that they surpassed Pennsylvania's nearly $300 million in one month, indicating Michigan's significant contribution to gambling tax income.
The MGCB has been proactive in directing funds from the gaming industry towards various causes. In 2024, the board donated $4 million to the First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund, $3.75 million to the "Don't Regret the Bet" campaign, and $3 million to the state's Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund. The board also contributed $3.7 million to the Agriculture Equine Industry Development Fund.
Mobile sports bets directed $12.9 million to the Lansing capital. Taxes on fantasy sports fees amounted to $297K.
The MGCB reported that 2024 was a record-setting year for the state's commercial and tribal gaming industries. The board's efforts in regulating and promoting the industry have undoubtedly played a crucial role in its success. As the gaming industry continues to grow, so too will the benefits it brings to Michigan's economy and various community initiatives.
