Micron takes over as Onondaga County initiates eviction of 91-year-old widow
In the heart of Syracuse, New York, 400 contractors gathered at a hotel ballroom, eager to secure a piece of the action as Micron Technology prepares to break ground on its first phase of a chipmaking complex. The complex is slated to be built on a 1,400-acre tract, with the construction set to commence in November.
However, the plans for this high-tech venture have not been without controversy. The Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency served an eviction notice on Thursday to Azalia King, a 91-year-old widow living at 8700 Caughdenoy Road in Clay. The property where her home is located is part of the 1,400-acre tract, and the eviction notice was issued due to the planned construction of Micron's chipmaking complex.
Ms. King's home, situated at the edge of the land where the complex will be built, was once promised to her by Onondaga County for her to live in for the rest of her life. The timing of Micron's Central New York project aligns with the AI boom, but the development has sparked concerns from environmental groups, who claim the construction plans contain gaps and misstatements.
Meanwhile, Micron is positioning itself as an antidote to Central New York's brain drain, with 16 of its interns featured in a guest opinion piece. The development of Micron's chip complex in New York is expected to result in record sales for the company.
As for Ms. King's alternative residence, it remains undisclosed to the public. The eviction of a vulnerable member of the community has sparked debate and calls for action, adding a poignant human dimension to the high-tech development plans.
