Migrant journey from Africa ends in devastating loss as numerous individuals perish by drowning
In a heart-wrenching incident, at least 70 migrants lost their lives off the coast of Mauritania while attempting to reach the Spanish Canary Islands. The rescue operation was mounted by the Mauritanian Coast Guard, who rescued 17 people alive.
The boat, which originated from The Gambia a week prior, sank approximately 80 kilometers north of Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, on Tuesday. The exact cause of the boat sinking is not specified.
The nationality of the survivors, as well as the migrants on board, is not known. However, it is understood that among the 160 people on the sunken boat were Senegalese and Gambian nationals.
The 'Atlantic route' is a common migratory route to the Canary Islands, but it is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. Drownings are common during the perilous crossing due to strong ocean currents and dilapidated vessels.
Sadly, thousands of deaths occur annually on this route. In 2024 alone, at least 10,457 migrants died while trying to reach Spain by sea, according to the NGO Caminando Fronteras.
Despite the tragedy, search and rescue operations continue to be active. Rescue teams are preparing to dive to conduct checks on the sunken ship. The captain or leader of the boat has not been publicly identified.
In a positive note, official data shows that 46,843 migrants arrived in Spain in 2024. It is a testament to the resilience and determination of those who make the dangerous journey, hoping for a better life.
