Migrants aboard small vessels travel the Channel en masse, reaching a thousand in a single day, mere hours following Starmer's significant cabinet reorganization; the border predicament escalates further.
In a significant shift, Shabana Mahmood has been appointed as the new Home Secretary, replacing Yvette Cooper, on the day of Sir Keir Starmer's cabinet reshuffle. This appointment comes at a time when the UK is grappling with an escalating immigration crisis and the pressing need for reform in the interpretation and application of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
The surge in illegal migration reached a new high on Saturday, with over 1,000 migrants entering the country. This brings the total number of migrants who have arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel since January to more than 30,000. The Home Secretary, in response, is considering reforming the ECHR to prevent over-interpretation and ensure more effective border control.
Ministers are also looking to tighten the interpretation and application of the ECHR, a move that has been urged by Labour MPs and grandees. The Prime Minister has made his stance on the ECHR clear to the Home Secretary, and it is expected that this reform will play a crucial role in addressing the current immigration crisis.
The lack of border control has been a subject of criticism, with Jonathan Hinder, a Labour backbencher, stating that it has undermined the UK's decency and tolerance. He believes that the situation requires immediate action to restore control.
In an effort to boost border command, military planners are being seconded to the Home Office. Moreover, ministers are close to securing a migrant returns pact with Germany, with the first returns under this deal expected to take place "imminently".
However, not everyone is satisfied with the proposed solutions. Reform, a think tank, has criticised the new boat plan, stating that it only tinkers around the edges and does not address the issue with the ECHR. Zia Yusuf, head of Policy at Reform, has vowed to detain and deport both men and women who arrive illegally by small boat.
Backbenchers are under pressure from voters to end the chaos at the borders. Chris Philp, Tory Shadow Home Secretary, has criticised the current government for losing control of the borders, calling it a full-blown crisis. The newly-appointed Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has expressed her dismay over the number of small boat crossings in the Channel, stating it as "utterly unacceptable".
As the new Home Secretary takes office, she faces a daunting task of addressing the immigration crisis and implementing the necessary reforms to ensure the safety and security of the British people. The government's approach to the ECHR and border control will be closely watched as the situation continues to evolve.
