Military aid to the northern region of Gaza from Israel may be reduced or ceased entirely as the military operation in the area expands.
In a move that is likely to attract more condemnation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to reduce or stop humanitarian aid to parts of the northern Gaza Strip as part of an expanded military offensive against Hamas.
The decision means Israel will stop airdrops over Gaza City and reduce the number of aid trucks in the north. This move comes amidst growing frustration over dire conditions in Gaza, where the Israeli military has increased strikes on the outskirts of Gaza City, where famine has been documented.
The Israeli government's decision has been met with concern from various international organisations. The United Nations and independent experts consider the Gaza Health Ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals, to be the most reliable source on war casualties.
The ministry reports a total of 63,371 Palestinians have died in Gaza during the war, with 332 deaths attributed to malnutrition-related causes, including 124 children. However, Israel disputes these figures but has not provided its own.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) states that a massive population movement would occur due to another major shift in Gaza's population of over 2 million people, given the widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure and extreme shortages of food, water, shelter, and medical care.
The situation in Gaza is dire. Gaza City has been declared a combat zone, and there has been no airdrop for several days across Gaza. The lack of aid has led to more deaths, with the Gaza Health Ministry reporting 10 more deaths due to starvation and malnutrition in the past 24 hours, including 3 children.
Israel recovered the remains of hostage Ilan Weiss, but 48 hostages still remain in Gaza from the October 7, 2023, attack, and Israel believes 20 are still alive. The situation is further complicated by incidents like the one where Israeli gunfire killed four people trying to get aid in central Gaza.
Residents like Amer Zayed from Deir al-Balah speak of the dire situation on the ground. He states there is no food, and water is not safe to drink. The situation in Gaza is a humanitarian crisis that demands immediate attention and action.
