Military collaborates with Alexandria to initiate Prevention Leadership Institute
U.S. Army Announces Community Prevention Leadership Academy
The U.S. Army has announced the establishment of a Community Prevention Leadership Academy, a collaborative initiative between the Army and the City of Alexandria. The academy aims to strengthen the military's efforts to combat suicide and other harmful behaviors among service members.
The academy will offer unique training opportunities for prevention specialists, as stated by Amanda Braasch, a prevention specialist. Participants will have access to more than 70 hours of virtual group instruction over three weeks, providing a comprehensive community-change model.
Students will also receive individual coaching and hands-on experience implementing this model. In addition, they will have access to ongoing skills development through on-demand virtual continuing education.
The training provided by the academy will produce over 400 tangible products to support senior commander oversight of prevention governance processes across the Army. This year, the academy will hold two training sessions for 80 personnel from units worldwide.
The academy's creation involves an Intergovernmental Support Agreement signed by the Directorate of Prevention, Resilience and Readiness and Alexandria. Alexandria officials worked with retired Army Maj. Gen. Barrye Price and his organization, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, to develop an Army-tailored prevention governance training program for the academy.
The first session of the academy will launch by the end of August and has already filled all available slots. Additional academy opportunities may be offered based on demand.
The academy aligns with recommendations from the Suicide Prevention and Response Independent Review Committee. It will provide professional development to Prevention Integrators and will be available for state and local members to share best practices.
