Military forces in Israel declare Gaza as a "humanitarian area"
In the southern Gaza Strip, the Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone, designated by the Israeli army in December 2023, is currently experiencing severe overcrowding. According to recent estimates, almost a million people reside in the city of Gaza, with less than 100,000 having left due to the impending offensive.
The Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone, which covers an area of about nine square kilometers, houses significant humanitarian infrastructure, including field hospitals, water pipelines, and desalination plants. However, the capacity of the field clinics within the zone is insufficient for the large number of people residing there.
The Israeli army has been intensifying air strikes in recent days, preparing for a major offensive in the city of Gaza. The military is urging residents of the northern Gaza Strip to move to the Al-Mawasi area as soon as possible.
It is important to note that the Israeli government has not previously announced plans to militarily occupy the city of Gaza. The Israeli army targeted the Islamic Hamas in the northern and central Gaza Strip in December 2023.
The designated humanitarian zone, Al-Mawasi, has been the recipient of humanitarian aid. However, UN organizations have described the sanitation facilities and waste management in the zone as inadequate. As of June this year, approximately 425,000 people were living in vast tent camps within the Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone.
An Arabic-speaking army spokesperson announced the designation of the humanitarian zone on a specific date X. The Israeli army previously declared Al-Mawasi a "humanitarian zone" in December 2023. The Israeli prime minister planning the military occupation of the city of Gaza is Benjamin Netanyahu.
Despite the challenges, humanitarian aid continues to be delivered to the Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone. As the situation in Gaza unfolds, the international community is closely monitoring the developments and the impact on the civilian population.
