Millennium's First Saint Granted by the Catholic Church

In a historic ceremony presided over by Pope Leo XVI in St. Peter's Square, the Catholic Church welcomed a new saint into its ranks. Carlo Acutis, an Italian teenager who died of leukemia in 2006, was canonized as the Church's first saint of the millennium.

The young man's life was thoroughly investigated by the Catholic Church, and two "miraculous healings" were attributed to him after his death, one in Florence and one in Brazil. The Vatican refers to Carlo Acutis as an "Influencer of God" because he promoted his faith online, earning him the nickname "Cyber-Apostle."

The canonization ceremony was a significant event, with over 80,000 people attending and two larger-than-life images of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, another Italian who was also canonized during the ceremony, hanging at St. Peter's Basilica.

Pope Leo XVI praised Carlo Acutis as a model of a young Christian who dedicated his life to God, and he spoke of an "invitation to all of us, especially young people, not to waste our lives but to direct them upwards and make them a masterpiece."

The process of beatification and canonization for Carlo Acutis took less than 20 years, which is unusually fast. The process follows a complex, multi-stage procedure by the Catholic Church.

Over a million people visited Carlo Acutis' body on display in a glass coffin in Assisi last year, and in his hometown, souvenir shops sell items related to him. His parents and his two siblings were present at the ceremony, making it a unique occasion as such a canonization with the family has only happened once before.

The Catholic Church hopes that the canonization of these "Young Saints" will make the Church more appealing to young people. The lives of these saints, including Carlo Acutis, serve as inspiring examples of faith and dedication for the younger generation.
