Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) in Mainz has been selected as a recipient of significant funding for a groundbreaking research project. The German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Science Council announced that the institution will receive up to €66 million over the next seven years to develop the "Excellence Cluster," a follow-up to the previously established "Prisma+" cluster.

The cluster focuses on advancing our understanding of fundamental physics, particularly precision measurements and searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The project involves collaboration across multiple disciplines, including theoretical physics, experimental physics, and advanced technology development.

The scientists at the Institute of Physics, the Institute of Nuclear Physics, and the Helmholtz Institute Mainz are investigating the possibility of unknown forces and particles that could offer explanations for certain phenomena in the universe, such as the existence of dark matter, which cannot be fully explained by the Standard Model of particle physics.

Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister of Science, Clemens Hoch (SPD), congratulated all those involved. Hoch commended the efforts of the Rhine-Main universities and expressed the state's continued support for their ongoing initiatives.

Unfortunately, a second application submitted by JGU in collaboration with Darmstadt University of Technology and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research was not selected for funding. This project, known as the "CoM2Life," aimed to develop soft biomaterials that could potentially replace animal testing or lead to the creation of long-term artificial organs in the future.

The German Research Foundation and the Science Council will continue to evaluate applications for additional Excellence Clusters in the coming years.
