Germany's New Digital Minister Pushes for Bureaucracy Reduction and Modernization

In a significant move, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has brought in a former top manager of MediaMarktSaturn, Karsten Wildberger, to head the new Ministry of Digital Affairs and State Modernization. Wildberger's mission is clear: to modernize administration, reduce bureaucracy, and improve networks.

In a letter sent on August 5, 2022, Wildberger expressed his hope for good cooperation with the other ministers and thanked them in advance for their contribution. He emphasized the need for the state to trust citizens and businesses more and give them more responsibility, as Germany has accumulated bureaucratic concrete over decades.

Wildberger called for consistent removal of bureaucracy in his letter, stating that the federal ministries are required to submit concrete proposals by September 15, 2025, aimed at reducing bureaucracy by about 16 billion euros. This equates to cutting 25% of the annual bureaucratic costs burdening the economy.

The focus of a reported October cabinet meeting will remain on "deregulation and de-bureaucratization." The meeting will discuss these measures, signaling a strong commitment by the entire government to trim bureaucratic burdens and modernize the state.

To ensure progress, Wildberger's ministry will contact departments to inquire about the status of "bureaucracy reduction projects." The specialist department of the ministry will oversee this process.

The Ministry of Digital Affairs and State Modernization will also focus on online citizen services. The "Bild" newspaper and the German Press Agency have reported on this letter, highlighting the importance of Wildberger's mission.

The need for bureaucracy reduction and modernization has been a hot topic in Germany, and Wildberger's appointment and letter have sparked a renewed sense of urgency. As the government gears up for the October cabinet meeting, the focus is on streamlining processes, reducing costs, and modernizing the state for the benefit of all citizens and businesses.
