Modern Adaptation Brightens Snow White's Tale in the Artsy Remake of the Beloved Disney Animation
Marc Webb's adaptation of Disney's classic fairytale, Snow White, is set to hit theaters on March 21, 2023. This modern, live-action interpretation of the original 1937 release, which marked the beginning of Disney's entertainment kingdom, is a musical remake that pays homage to the original while adding new songs to the Disney Princess music catalogue.
In the film, Rachel Zegler delivers a standout performance as Snow White, imbuing her character with an innocence and naive kindness that evolves into a different form of strength. Her vocals are praised as the best live-action Disney Princess performance in the adaptation, solidifying her place as this generation's Snow White.
The love story between Snow White and her love interest Jonathan (Andrew Burnap) is central to the tale, and it's enchanting and empowering all at once. The film gives Snow White and Jonathan a more believable meet-cute and a more Disney Renaissance-era core motivation.
The film also features the Evil Queen, portrayed by Gal Gadot, and her musical numbers. However, critics find Gadot's performance lacking the necessary diva quality. Conversely, the Dwarfs, voiced by a talented cast, are praised for capturing the endearing energy of the beloved characters, despite some criticism towards the CGI used for their depiction.
The film attempts to give the Dwarfs fantastical abilities connected to the gemstones they mine, but this concept is not fully explored. The musical numbers in the film, led by "Waiting on a Wish," are shining as gorgeous additions to the Disney Princess music catalogue in the tradition of The Sherman Bros. and Ashman and Menken. Other musical numbers include "Princess Problems" and "A Hand Meets a Hand," and the film is compared to classic films like It Happened One Night, Shall We Dance, The Princess Bride, and Aladdin.
However, the film's use of digital enhancements is criticized for being a letdown for fans. Additionally, Gadot's musical numbers in the film are deemed disappointing, with her voice sounding processed. The CGI used for the Dwarfs is also criticized for being atrocious and falling short of expectations.
Despite these criticisms, the combination of actors, music, dance numbers, and director makes Snow White a winning one, destined to be an instant Disney classic. The film is a refreshing update to the original, giving Snow White and her tale much-needed updates penned by Erin Cressida Wilson. With its new songs and newly arranged classics, Snow White is a must-see for Disney fans and newcomers alike.
