Modern Family Saga: Action-Filled Journey of Four Children
In the world of British film and television comedy, Andy De Emmony, a veteran director, has added another project to his impressive portfolio with the movie, Four Kids and It. The film, adapted from Jacqueline Wilson's bestselling book Four Children and It, published in 2012, tells the story of a group of kids who encounter an ancient creature called the Psammead, which has the power to grant wishes.
The Psammead is voiced by the legendary Michael Caine, lending an air of magic and mystery to the character. The movie is set in the context of a modern dysfunctional family, providing a fresh take on the original story.
Jacqueline Wilson, one of the UK's best-selling authors of the past decade, penned the original book. She drew inspiration from Edith Nesbit's Edwardian children's classic, Five Children and It, published in 1902. Wilson tried to mirror some situations from Nesbit's original story but not imitate her voice, creating a contemporary retelling that resonates with modern audiences.
Wilson, who spent most of her childhood in Kingston-on Thames, started her career as a journalist for DC Thomson in Scotland where JACKIE magazine was named after her. Julie Baines, a producing partner on the project, was involved in the film's genesis, having read the manuscript before its publication.
Simon Lewis, the screenwriter for Four Kids and It, has written several novels and screenplays, including the travel thriller "Go" and the crime thriller "Bad Traffic". De Emmony became involved in the project through his recommendation of Lewis as a writer.
Children's film and television producer Anne Brogan praises Wilson's work, particularly her understanding of children's emotions. The theme of "be careful what you wish for" is timeless in the movie, providing a message that resonates with both children and adults.
Baines, who is also responsible for the sequel wish, hopes that the film touches people and evokes emotional responses from the audience. Michael Caine's voicing of the Psammead, along with the compelling storyline and relatable characters, makes Four Kids and It a must-watch for fans of children's films and those who appreciate a good tale about the power of wishes.
