The iconic Conran Building, located at 22 Shad Thames in South London's Bermondsey, has undergone a 21st century refresh under the guidance of Squire & Partners. Originally designed by Hopkins, a Stirling Prize winner and high-tech architecture studio, in 1991 for David Mellor CBE, the building's utilitarian warehouse aesthetic remains strong in the new design.
The redesign, spanning approximately 16,000 sq ft, offers various workspace options. Tim Gledstone, senior partner at Squire & Partners, has added modern architectural and lifestyle features to the building, while maintaining its spirit. Occupancy inside the building can be flexible, with new tenants offered the option to take on a single floor or a duplex.
One of the standout features of the revitalized Conran Building is the abundance of amenities for cyclists. Basement facilities, including a cyclist suite, showers, toilets, and a lunch-and-run area, will be accessible to all tenants in the building. This is a testament to Squire & Partners' commitment to promoting sustainable and active lifestyles.
The original modular nature and concrete column grid of the building were preserved, ensuring flexibility in the internal arrangement. Many of David Mellor's handmade and hand-finished non-structural elements have been restored in the redesign, reflecting the building's rich history. New services and functions, such as larger kitchen units and additional storage, have been added to meet 21st century needs.
Tim Gledstone appreciates the interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces, the connection to the Thames and Dock, and the flexible framework in the building. A terrace on the ground level and another at the top will be available for selected tenants, further enhancing this connection.
The Conran Building's sustainability has been improved, featuring the installation of air source heat pumps and a state-of-the-art VRF heating and cooling system. These modern additions ensure that the building remains energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
