Mongolian president and Lee reinforce mutual relations during phone discussions

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh held their first phone conversation on Thursday, September 4, 2025. The discussion marked the first communication between the two leaders since President Lee took office.

During the conversation, both leaders agreed to maintain close communication to deepen bilateral ties and further strengthen their strategic partnership. They also expressed a shared interest in expanding people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.

President Lee proposed "mutually beneficial" cooperation between Mongolia and South Korea, highlighting South Korea's advanced technologies and Mongolia's rich natural resources as potential areas for collaboration. The Mongolian President expressed gratitude for Lee's attention to migrant workers in South Korea, including those from Mongolia.

However, the phone conversation did not mention any specific plans regarding migrant workers. President Lee's appreciation for the Mongolian government's support in the opening of a memorial hall for Korean independence activist Lee Tae-joon was also discussed. The memorial hall honours Lee Tae-joon, a Korean independence activist who served as the physician to Mongolia's last khan.

The conversation was confirmed by presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung in a written briefing. The discussion focused on exploring ways to further strengthen their strategic partnership and deepen bilateral ties.

President Lee Jae Myung's expression of gratitude for Mongolia's support in the opening of the Lee Tae-joon memorial hall is a testament to the growing relationship between the two nations. As they continue to communicate and collaborate, the future of the South Korea-Mongolia relationship looks promising.
