The UK automotive market is witnessing a significant shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) as August 2025 registrations reveal a 27% share of the total market for EVs. Tesla continues to lead the pack, but rivals are gaining ground.

Tesla, the pioneer in the EV market, has registered 28,163 cars in 2025 so far, a notable figure that places it at the top. However, the company's market share has dropped to 15%, indicating a growing competition.

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are also making their presence felt, with 23,453 sales during the same period. The UK registered 21,403 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in August 2025 alone, marking a 10.3% increase year-on-year.

Volkswagen and Ford occupied the second and third positions respectively in August 2025, with Volkswagen's EV registrations more than doubling (+122%) to 22,198 in 2025. The brand's best-selling electric model, ID.7, has been a key driver of this growth, particularly in Germany during the first eight months of 2025.

Tesla remained the top EV seller with 3,203 registrations in August 2025, but Ford's EV sales jumped significantly, from 556 in August 2024 to 1,410 in August 2025. BMW is also narrowing the gap in EV sales.

Škoda is making waves in the EV market, with its success attributed to the Enyaq and the new Elroq. The brand is on course to overtake Kia in EV sales, thanks to a 132% increase in sales to 14,074.

However, not all brands are experiencing the same success. MG (-26%) and Volvo (-32%) are experiencing a decline in EV sales. Renault is under pressure to meet its 10.81% EV sales target, while some brands are still awaiting official approval for a broader range of offerings before committing to purchases.

Polestar's EV sales rose by 94% to 734 units in August 2025, and MINI saw a 157% surge in EV sales, reaching 766 cars in August 2025.

The updated Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate is helping most brands meet targets, as it allows manufacturers to transfer certificates from non-EVs. BYD was the best-performing Chinese manufacturer with 946 registrations in August 2025.

September is expected to be a key month for EV registrations due to the registration plate change and the first notable effects of the Government's Electric Car Grant. With the growing demand and the increasing number of options, it seems the UK automotive market is set for a full-fledged electric revolution.
