Four Reasons Why an Elk Feels at Home in the Black Forest - Moose Spotted in Black Forest, Origin a Mystery
A moose has been spotted in the forest, causing a stir among locals and wildlife enthusiasts. The origin of this solitary creature remains a mystery, but experts believe it may have escaped from human captivity.
The forest's landscape, with its extensive forests and accessible water, provides an ideal habitat for a moose. These adaptable creatures feed on a variety of plants, including herbs, leaves, aquatic plants, and tree bark. The moose was first sighted in Oberwolfach and later in Oberharmersbach in the Ortenau district.
Wildlife officer Maximilian Lang suggests that the moose likely comes from human captivity, rather than migrating from Poland or the Czech Republic. Establishing a moose population in the forest would require migration corridors from existing occurrences. However, this moose would be alone, with no conspecifics for reproduction.
The moose's presence in the forest is a rare occurrence, with occasional sightings in eastern German states due to individual animals' journeys. Its origin remains uncertain, but its survival in the suitable climate and landscape is a fascinating development for wildlife observers.
