In a surprising development, Morrissey has announced his decision to sell his share of The Smiths' business interests. The announcement, made on Morrissey Central, his official website, was titled 'A Soul For Sale'.

According to the post, Morrissey feels the need to protect himself, especially his health, from "malicious associations" with his former bandmates. The sale would include his full and exclusive rights to The Smiths' name, artwork, merchandising rights, songs, synchronization rights, recordings, and contractual rights for publishing.

Morrissey and Johnny Marr jointly own half of The Smiths' business interests. However, it appears their relationship has deteriorated in recent years, with the tour offer made by AEG Group in 2025 serving as a point of contention. Morrissey accepted the offer, but Johnny Marr declined, citing the vibe not being right.

Johnny Marr later elaborated on his reasons for rejecting the tour on the Stick To Football podcast, but he has yet to comment on Morrissey's purported Smiths sale.

Johnny Marr has also claimed that Morrissey made trademark-related statements to prevent third parties from profiting from The Smiths' name. Morrissey, on the other hand, stated that he has paid his "rightful dues" to the songs and images of The Smiths throughout his life and wants to live disassociated from those who wish him ill-will and destruction.

Interested parties can contact [email protected] for potential involvement in the Smiths' business. A photo was shared along with the announcement on Morrissey's official Instagram account.

As of now, it remains to be seen how this development will affect the future of The Smiths and the dynamics between Morrissey and Johnny Marr.
