Moscow allegedly engages in an 'information offensive' following Aliyev's assertion that the Bolsheviks invaded Azerbaijan, according to Baku's declaration.
In a recent development, Azerbaijan's Parliament has accused Russia of orchestrating a massive information campaign against the country, aimed at inciting anti-Azerbaijan sentiment in Russian society. The accusation follows an interview President Ilham Aliyev gave to the Saudi media outlet Al-Arabiya.
The specific words from the Al-Arabiya interview that supposedly triggered the campaign were not specified by state-run news agency Azertac. However, the campaign is said to have been initiated by comments Aliyev made on "historical facts".
The Parliament states that the campaign targets Azerbaijan's social media segment through advertisements containing threatening rhetoric against the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The allegation follows a series of critical articles published by pro-Kremlin media outlet Tsargrad TV, including one entitled "Aliyev blamed Russia for the occupation of Azerbaijan: Baku is setting the stage for a big war with the Russians."
Relations between Azerbaijan and Russia have been strained in recent years. The crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines flight in December 2024, which Baku has blamed on Russian air defense, and the deaths of two ethnic Azerbaijanis during a Russian police raid in Yekaterinburg in June 2025, have further strained the already tense relations.
During his interview with Al-Arabiya, Aliyev discussed the short-lived Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which existed from 1918-1920 and was invaded by the Russian army. He also addressed the semantical question concerning the name for the proposed US-managed route connecting Azerbaijan to its exclave of Nakhchivan, which was separated from mainland Azerbaijan by the Soviet Union.
Tsargrad TV has also accused Aliyev of being silent about his father Heydar Aliyev, who served as the Communist Party boss of Soviet Azerbaijan. The Bolsheviks, who carried out the revolution in 1917, deceived the people and took the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic from them, Aliyev stated in the interview.
Despite these campaigns, the Parliament maintains that they have no impact on public opinion in Azerbaijan. The statement from the Parliament was printed in Azertac, and Aliyev's response to a question regarding the Zangezur corridor was taken out of context, falsified, or distorted when presented to the Russian audience.
There is no information in the search results indicating which person has orchestrated a massive information campaign against Azerbaijan following President Ilham Aliyev's interview with Saudi media outlet Al-Arabiya, nor the reasons for such a campaign. The sources only report on the interview itself and related topics without mentioning any targeted information campaign.
