In a significant display of unity, European leaders gathered in Paris for a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, aiming to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz led the discussions, joined virtually by around two dozen other heads of state and government, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister, and Polish President.

Chancellor Merz outlined the details of the call, stressing Europe's commitment to increasing sanctions pressure on Russia to enhance the chances of a diplomatic solution. He stated that in a negotiated solution to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Europe is ready to contribute decisively to significant security guarantees for Ukraine.

President Macron reported that 26 countries, including Germany, Italy, and Poland, have agreed to potentially deploy troops to support Ukraine by land, sea, and air to help secure a ceasefire or peace agreement. However, no new information was provided about a potential summit where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participates or Europe's readiness to contribute decisively to significant security guarantees for Ukraine.

In a strong statement, Chancellor Merz labelled Russian President Vladimir Putin as "the most serious war criminal of our time." The Kremlin has yet to respond to this accusation.

Following the meeting, a telephone call took place between the coalition and US President Donald Trump. The coalition expressed hope to Trump that the USA will continue to significantly contribute to the efforts to support, formulate security guarantees, and shape a diplomatic process.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President António Costa were also present at the meeting. The German government had previously announced that the German contribution to security guarantees could include strengthening Ukrainian air defense. However, no new information was provided about Germany's readiness to contribute financially, arm, and train Ukrainian forces.

The meeting took place in a hybrid format, with some participants present in person, while others joined via video link. As the diplomatic efforts continue, the coalition remains hopeful for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
