Most Brits Remain Unaware That Opening an Email Could Potentially Trigger a Cyber Attack (7 out of 10)
In a revealing survey conducted by email provider Mailjet, it was found that over two-thirds of Brits are unaware that opening an email could expose their computers to a cyber attack. The research, led by Marie-Christine Mazzoleni, highlights the need for both consumers and businesses to prioritise basic email safety.
The survey did not provide details about the number of participants or the specific methods used. However, it did reveal some concerning trends. For instance, almost 70% of the surveyed Brits do not view emails as a threat to computer security. This general ignorance surrounding emails, according to Mailjet's Amir Jirbandey, is one of the biggest threats to cyber security.
The survey found that many Brits disregard their basic understanding of email safety when dealing with risky or popular culture content in emails. For example, 19% had knowingly opened an email that contained images of a beautiful woman or man. More workers admitted to opening an email with Kim Kardashian in the subject line than Kate Middleton. Shockingly, 10% of respondents admitted to opening an email that explicitly mentioned containing nudity, and 18% opened an email with a swear word in the subject line.
The Sony attack last year emphasized the danger of email hacking. Organisations are likely to be targeted with more advanced and specific attacks to exploit weaknesses in IT infrastructure. Yet, despite this, no information was provided about the potential impact of these cyber attacks on personal or business data.
The survey did not reveal any differences in email safety attitudes between different age groups, genders, or professions in Britain. It is concerning that almost half of the surveyed Brits admitted to opening a personal or non-work related email at work. This could potentially put businesses at risk.
The survey did not provide any recommendations or solutions for improving email safety among Brits. However, it is clear that education and awareness are key to combating this issue. It is essential for individuals and businesses to be vigilant when it comes to email security and to take steps to protect themselves from potential cyber attacks.
