A Boy with Autism and His Mother's Marathon Journey

Lisa Fernandez-Cruz, a mother from New York City, is preparing to run in her second TCS New York City Marathon. However, this year's marathon holds a special significance as her son, Wilfrin, will be participating in the event's Youth Invitational.

Wilfrin, who is a student at one of the city's Autism Spectrum Disorder Nest Schools, took up running three years ago under the guidance of the New York Road Runners' Team for Kids program. This initiative aims to expose young people to running, among other initiatives.

The NYRR's Team for Kids program has been significant for the Fernandez-Cruz family. Running has not only been a source of physical activity for Wilfrin but has also helped him make remarkable progress in school and make friends.

In fact, Wilfrin was able to connect with teammates who shared his passion for running at his old school, PS 187. His involvement in the program even led him to run on a track team, which was funded in part by the NYRR.

Running has had a positive impact on Wilfrin's life, helping him manage stress from school and improve focus, according to Lisa. It has been a transformative experience for the young boy with autism.

As Wilfrin prepares for the Youth Invitational, he will be running alongside his mother, Lisa. While Wilfrin is participating in the marathon, he is not yet running at marathon distance. However, Lisa and Wilfrin have plans to run a 10-kilometer race together in the near future.

In addition to his participation in the marathon, Wilfrin has become a youth ambassador with the NYRR. This role allows him to share his love for running and inspire other young people with autism.

Lisa, who also has a 9-year-old son named George, is running to raise funds for Team for Kids. Her dedication to the cause is a testament to the positive impact the program has had on her family.

Despite the challenges that come with raising a child with autism, Lisa's journey with Wilfrin has been a rewarding one. Through running, Wilfrin has found a passion that has helped him grow and thrive. The TCS New York City Marathon will be a celebration of his progress and a testament to the power of perseverance.
